International Literacy Day in New Mexico

New Mexico will celebrate International Literacy Day, Monday, September 8 with John Corcoran, “The Teacher Who Couldn't Read.”  The New Mexico Coalition for Literacy has organized this event for the New Mexico State Capitol Building, 491 Old Santa Fe Trail, in Santa Fe at 10 - 11:30 a.m.  After the reading of the proclamation of International Literacy Day at the Roundhouse in the Rotunda, the featured guest speaker will be John Corcoran, author of "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read."  Mr. Corcoran learned to read after he became an adult, only after he had already taught for many years! John Corcoran once lived in Santa Fe and now serves on the Board of the National Institute for Literacy.  He also promotes intergenerational literacy efforts both through his advocacy and foundation.  For more information contact Heather Heunermund, 800-233-7587, info@nmcl.org.  The NM Coalition for Literacy website is at www.nmcl.org.
